The hard part is that “free” means nine different things in this category: free until the second project, free with a watermark, free if you never export, free forever with no catch. So we went through the nine free tiers one by one and wrote down, in numbers, what each one actually gives you.

Nine tools, the same three questions

We did not score these out of ten. The right pick depends on whether you are briefing a builder, furnishing a rental or modelling a staircase, and one number hides all of that. So every tool below answers the same three questions, and the free-tier numbers were checked on 3 September 2026.

What the free tier actually includes, in numbers: projects, floors, renders, credits.
What you can get out of it for free: file type, resolution, watermark or no watermark.
What the free tier stops you doing, in the vendor’s own words.

Two entries carry numbers we could not confirm on the vendor’s own page, Homestyler and Magicplan. Both say so where the number appears. Everything else came from the vendor’s own pricing page or its own documentation.

Disclosure: Cona is one of the nine and we make it. Its limits are listed the same way as everyone else’s, and the honest summary sits at the end of its entry: if you need construction drawings, one of the 2D tools is the better tool.

Best for a quick, clean 2D sketch

Floorplanner

Fast and pleasant to draw in, and the flip from 2D to 3D is smooth. If all you want is a tidy plan of one flat, this is the nicest way to get one.

Free tier: Up to 5 projects, each capped at 3 floors and 3 designs. Exports are SD only, 960 by 540 pixels, with a watermark. HD, 4K and 8K exports are bought per project with credits, which start at $8.15 for five.

The catch: You can draw for free, but the picture you actually want to send someone costs money.

Verdict, September 2026: The best free 2D drawing experience in this list, as long as a watermarked 960 by 540 image is enough.

Cona vs Floorplanner

Best for a polished plan that goes in a listing

RoomSketcher

The tidiest output in the group. Plans come out looking professional with no effort, which is why estate agents use it.

Free tier: 2 credits to start, plus one free AI floor plan conversion. Credits are the currency: a 2D or 3D plan, a 3D photo or a 360 view is $4 each à la carte, and an AI conversion is $20 per floor. Pro is $12 a month billed annually for 5 credits a month.

The catch: The free tier is a sample, not a plan.

Verdict, September 2026: Worth paying for if you need listing-grade plans regularly. For one room, two credits run out fast.

Cona vs RoomSketcher

Best for an accurate 2D plan with a 3D walk-through

Planner 5D

Friendly, capable, and more generous than it used to be. Projects are unlimited on the free plan, saved and shared.

Free tier: Unlimited projects on web and mobile, with roughly half the furniture catalog. The other 10,000-plus items, standard and 4K renders, floor plan upload with AI recognition, 360 panoramas, CAD export and the budget widget are Premium, at $19.99 a month or $59.99 a year.

The catch: You get unlimited rooms and half the furniture.

Verdict, September 2026: The strongest all-round free tier for drawing. The catalog gate is what you will hit, not a project cap.

Cona vs Planner 5D

Best for designing a room with real furniture you can buy, free, with no sign-up

Cona

Ours, so read this entry with that in mind. The homepage opens a furnished room you can edit straight away and asks for no account at any point. Rooms are true to scale, and the catalog is real products at real prices from IKEA, CB2, Herman Miller and others, each piece linking out to the retailer.

Free tier: Free. No project cap, no watermark, no credits, no export fee. Two newer features carry a limit rather than a price: photo-to-3D imports are capped at five for now, and Imagine, the photoreal polish, needs you to be signed in.

The catch: It is room design, not drafting. There is no CAD export and no construction documentation.

Verdict, September 2026: Pick it to furnish a real room and shop it. If you need a dimensioned drawing for a builder, use Floorplanner or RoomSketcher instead.

Best for fast 3D rooms with a very large brand catalog

Homestyler

Quick to learn, and the model library is enormous. If the piece exists, someone has modelled it.

Free tier: Unlimited 1K renders, all watermarked, and a library of 100,000-plus free models. 4K renders are bought one at a time.

The catch: Every free render carries a watermark.

Verdict, September 2026: A good free option if the watermark does not matter to you.

Cona vs Homestyler

Best for real brand catalogs and sharp images

HomeByMe

Genuinely nice output, with catalogs from brands you have actually heard of.

Free tier: Starter: 2 projects, 5 Full HD images, unlimited 2D and 3D screenshots, and a 90,000-plus product catalog. Paid plans lift the project cap.

The catch: Two projects, and a second room is a second project.

Verdict, September 2026: Best for a single room you care a lot about. Not for someone planning a whole flat.

Cona vs HomeByMe

Best for modelling geometry in detail

SketchUp Free

A real 3D modeller in a browser tab, at app.sketchup.com. It will do things nothing else here can do.

Free tier: The web version, for personal and non-commercial use only. No LayOut, no extensions, no DWG or OBJ import, and file size limits.

The catch: It is a modeller, not a room planner. There is no furniture catalog, so every piece is something you model or import yourself.

Verdict, September 2026: The right tool for a custom built-in. The wrong tool for a Saturday afternoon.

Cona vs SketchUp

Best for free forever, offline, no strings

Sweet Home 3D

The only tool here with no paid tier at all. Open source, and it runs on Mac, Windows and Linux.

Free tier: All of it. No account, no upsell, no watermark. You do have to download it.

The catch: It looks like 2009 and it is a desktop install.

Verdict, September 2026: If free is the whole requirement, this is the honest winner, and it has been for twenty years.

Cona vs Sweet Home 3D

Best for measuring a room instead of drawing it

Magicplan

Point your phone around a room and the plan builds itself in about a minute. Built for contractors, and it shows, in a good way.

Free tier: Starter: 2 projects in total, not per month, on up to 2 devices. No ESX or FML export, and no API.

The catch: Two projects, then it is a subscription.

Verdict, September 2026: The fastest way to an as-built plan, if you only need a couple of them.

Nine tools call themselves free. They mean five different things by it.

Actually free · Sweet Home 3D, Cona: Sweet Home 3D has never had a paid tier. Cona earns a commission when a retailer sells furniture you chose to buy, which is what keeps the room designer free.

None of these is dishonest. They are just different businesses, and knowing which one you are dealing with saves you an afternoon.
